Conventional basketball wisdom gives the advantage to the team with the greater height, individually and collectively. This is how that wisdom is defied. Windsor’s twin towers, #21 and #22, were in a position to dominate the Jokers who were just kidding about their diminutive stature.
Now I need to apologize for the lack of detail in the first half which ended 18-13 in favour of JO (named for the premier of B.C. from 1918-1927). Its motto – “Virtus Vincit” – means courage conquers all. More about that later. My apology is based on the “fact” that my dog ate my notes for the first half. But enough about me.
JO sported First Nations- styled uniforms on white background. Windsor was in green.
The gap in the half-time score was quickly prompted by a lefty layup by Windsor’s Alea Nader. However, JO’s lead was quickly restored by a 3 from #20. The lead bobbled between the teams at this stage. What began to emerge was the power of the Domingo sisters, particularly the elder of the 2, Gr. 12 Maddox. She played as if every ball in the possession of Windsor belonged to her. But she did not act alone. At one point one of the Windsor towers was completely surrounded by 5 Jokers. The siege was only broken by the reach of the Windsor player who held the ball high and out of reach of the mob.
After a Windsor fast break by Nader, JO’s lead was only 1. A slick passing sequence by JO was finished at the end of Q3 with the score 28-23 in favour of JO.
Beginning Q4, JO went on a 9-point run. Their teamwork was outstanding coordinated by Maddox Domingo who seemed to be everywhere. Every JO possession seemed to pass through hands at some point. Finally, with 4 minutes left Windsor broke their scoring drought but the damage was done and JO had an 11-point lead. The final score was 39-28 in favour of JO. Hats off in favour of these two teams and the courageous Jokers.
