Carson Graham v Maple Ridge
In the heart of North Vancouver, excitement buzzed through the air as the home team Carson Graham Eagles took on Maple Ridge. The Eagles side of the stands were filled with eager spectators for the highly anticipated “No Regrets” tournament. As the teams warm up, the atmosphere is electric. Who doesn’t love a home game on a Friday afternoon?
The first quarter saw both teams trading baskets. Carson’s #11 Pettersen got off to a quick start hitting a high percentage of shots by driving to the basket with a few slick Euro steps. However, Maple Ridge were not to be underestimated. Led by #7 Sampson and his shooting prowess, Maple Ridge responded with tenacious defense and a few good offensive sets that led to easy buckets. The second quarter continued with the hard-fought battle. Maple Ridge #2 Mouawia couldn’t buy a basket, but continued to drive hard to the hole and create for teammates. You could tell it was only a matter of time… (more on this later).
The first half ends with the scoreboard 32-31 in favor of the Eagles, setting the stage for an epic showdown in the second half.
Maple Ridge took the first lead of the game with a nice set play out of the timeout. The third quarter unfolded with a series lead changes. #7 Sampson of Maple Ridge hitting a few crucial shots and running back-to-back pick-and-rolls like a young John Stockton. Oh, and did I mention #2 Mouawia? After hearing his share of heckling from the opposing Carson crowd, Mouawia exploded for some impressive drives and a couple of threes, silencing the crowd. However, Carson’s Pettersen and #21 Forrester kept the game close for the Eagles. Score after the 3rd 50-52 in favor of Maple Ridge.
Now how about for a little drama? Carson Graham’s Pettersen started laboring from a lower body injury, and left the game with 6 minutes left in the 4th with his team up 4. Never fear #24 Abkenar is here. Showing off the soft touch around the basket and relentless offensive rebounding Abkenar sparked Carson to push the lead to 10pts. They never looked back.
Final Score: Carson Graham 74, Maple Ridge 63
Top Scorers: Carson Graham – K. Petterson – 34pts; Maple Ridge - L Sampson – 24pts
Player of the game: #24 B. Abkenar
