Boys: Sentinel vs. Pitt Meadows
Written by Julie Bauman
The Spartans took on the Marauders Friday night in the Handsworth gym. It was nice to see Rich Goulet still coaching at Pitt, quite the heritage.
The Spartans took the early lead leaving the Marauders without a response. By the 7th minute Coach Goulet was not happy with what he was seeing on the floor and made some substitutions. But the Spartans were too quick and athletic, outpacing their opponents with some nice open court play. Marauder players struggled to hold onto the ball.
The first quarter ended with Sentinel leading by 8 (Sent.20-Pitt 12)
The second quarter saw Pitt Meadows still trying to challenge. There were glimmers of solid defence from Pitt and Marauders big man #34 managed to draw a number of fouls and was pretty effective at free throws. With 9 minutes left in the second quarter #14 from Sentinel drew his 3rd foul and sat down. This didn't slow the Spartans down with their considerable bench to draw upon. At the half it was Sentinel with a commanding 46 to Pitt Meadows 20.
The second half started with Pitt Meadows in possession that was immediately stolen by a Sentinel player for 2 points. This set the tone and the pace for the remainder of the game. With three minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter the Spartans were up by 40 points and managed to play most of the bench. Indeed the Spartans bench players were providing some pleasing moments for their teammates.
Final score Spartans 77- Marauders 50.
